The REUSE EUROMED 2024 Conference, held in Montpellier, France, from October 29th to 31st, 2024, served as a significant platform for sharing experiences and insights on wastewater reuse across Europe and the Mediterranean. Participants from diverse fields discussed methodologies, design approaches, operational challenges, and evaluations of reuse projects, contributing to a holistic understanding of water reuse practices.
Researchers from the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA), including Sofia Semitsoglou-Tsiapou, Sara Rodriguez-Mozaz, and Gianluigi Buttiglieri, actively participated in the event. As part of the program, the following findings from the PRIMA-SAFE project were presented:
- “Reclaimed wastewater fertigation in Mediterranean water-scarce areas and micropollutant uptake in tomato fruit”, a platform presentation by Sofia Semitsoglou-Tsiapou, Brienza M., Trotta V., Khadhar S., Khiari N., Santos L., Rodriguez-Mozaz S., and Buttiglieri G.
- “Environmental and human health risk assessment of pharmaceuticals in a Soil-Plant System Irrigated with Reclaimed Water in a Mediterranean Region”, a platform presentation by Sara Rodriguez-Mozaz, Castaño-Trias M., Verlicchi P., and Buttiglieri G.
These presentations emphasized the project’s critical contributions to understanding reclaimed wastewater’s role in addressing water scarcity in agriculture while evaluating the associated risks for both environmental and human health.
The conference underscored the PRIMA-SAFE consortium’s dedication to promoting sustainable water reuse practices and facilitating knowledge exchange across regions facing similar challenges.
