SAFE-PRIMA Project’s Ambitious Goals for Water Reuse in Agriculture

At the recent International Workshop hosted by the University of Kenitra in Morocco, Dr. Georgios K. Ntinas presented the transformative potential of the SAFE-PRIMA project. Under the theme of “SAFE” – Sustainable water reuse practices improving safety in Agriculture, Food, and Environment – the project aims to tackle pressing issues like water scarcity and climate change through innovative water management techniques.

Led by ELGO-DIMITRA with strategic direction from Dr. Afroditi Tsampalla, SAFE-PRIMA focuses on creating safe, efficient methods to reuse treated wastewater for agriculture. This initiative spans several Mediterranean countries, each bringing local expertise and knowledge to develop adaptable solutions that address both agricultural productivity and environmental health.

The methodology presented by Dr. Ntinas includes a series of practices that ensure treated wastewater is safe for crops and the surrounding ecosystem. This involves advanced water treatment processes, comprehensive risk assessments, and rigorous quality control measures to monitor water, soil, and crop health. By implementing these techniques, the project aims to reduce the dependency on freshwater resources, conserve soil quality, and foster resilience in agricultural systems.

Supported by the PRIMA Programme and the General Secretariat for Research and Innovation, SAFE-PRIMA exemplifies the power of collaboration and innovation in facing global challenges. The project is a beacon of sustainable agricultural practices, showcasing how science and teamwork can create a brighter, water-efficient future across the Mediterranean.
