The 4th International RETASTE Conference (Rethink Food Resources, Losses, and Waste) took place in Heraklion, Greece, from September 25th to 27th, 2024. This conference fostered discussions on innovative strategies and optimization schemes aimed at reducing food waste and rethinking resource management.
As part of the conference program, Sofia Semitsoglou-Tsiapou, a researcher from the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA), presented findings from the PRIMA-SAFE project. Her platform presentation, titled:
- “Reclaimed wastewater fertigation in Mediterranean water-scarce areas and micropollutant uptake in tomato fruit”, authored by Semitsoglou-Tsiapou S., Brienza M., Trotta V., Khadhar S., Khiari N., Santos L., Rodríguez-Mozaz S., and Buttiglieri G,
focused on the use of reclaimed wastewater for fertigation in water-scarce regions of the Mediterranean. The research highlighted the potential for sustainable agricultural practices, while addressing the uptake of micropollutants in tomato fruits, a critical aspect for ensuring food safety and environmental sustainability.
PRIMA-SAFE’s participation at RETASTE 2024 underscores the project’s commitment to addressing water scarcity and promoting sustainable agriculture through innovative water reuse strategies. This engagement also highlights the project’s interdisciplinary approach to tackling environmental and food security challenges.
