Smart Farming in Tomato Fields

🍅🌿 At the Institute of Plant Breeding and Genetic Resources within ELGO-DIMITRA, a team of researchers is pushing the boundaries of sustainable agriculture with cutting-edge technology. As part of the PRIMA-SAFE project, this team is utilizing smart Lysimeters and tensiometers to bring precision to water management and soil health monitoring in tomato cultivation. Led by experts in plant breeding and water resource management, the institute’s research focuses on maximizing crop resilience while conserving water, a critical resource in Mediterranean agriculture.

The institute’s role within PRIMA-SAFE is to develop advanced methods for monitoring water usage and soil moisture, ensuring that crops receive just the right amount of water at the right time. This approach supports sustainable agricultural practices by reducing water waste, improving crop health, and increasing yields. By integrating technology with plant science, the institute is pioneering a new era in resource-efficient farming.

Supported by the General Secretariat for Research and Innovation under the PRIMA Programme, this project exemplifies the impact of research-driven collaboration on agriculture. With these innovations, the team is setting the stage for a resilient, data-informed agricultural future.
