In Morocco’s Tinghir region, the Institut Agronomique et Vétérinaire Hassan II (IAV Hassan II) is leading initiatives to improve agricultural sustainability through innovative irrigation techniques. As a key partner in the PRIMA-SAFE project, IAV Hassan II is evaluating advanced irrigation methods tailored for water-scarce areas to enhance agricultural productivity while conserving water.
This project explores two specific irrigation methods:
- Surface Drip Irrigation, which applies water directly to the soil surface near plant roots, reducing water loss through evaporation and ensuring more precise water delivery.
- Subirrigation, which applies water below the soil surface, allowing uniform moisture distribution and further minimizing water loss.
To evaluate these methods comprehensively, IAV Hassan II has established detailed field protocols that include monitoring meteorological data, soil properties, and water characteristics. This rigorous data collection enables precise tracking of plant growth, crop yield, and irrigation efficiency, providing insights to refine and optimize irrigation practices.
Integrating these irrigation methods with the wastewater treatment innovations from PRIMA-SAFE, IAV Hassan II aims to set new standards for sustainable agriculture in Morocco’s oasis regions. These efforts not only support local agriculture but also contribute to PRIMA-SAFE’s mission to develop adaptable, eco-friendly water management practices for Mediterranean climates.
